Before you go to the expense of a service call be sure that you haven’t overlooked a simple problem you can take care of yourself.

Below are a few tips to help you trouble shoot potential “ailments” commonly encountered.

* For all appliances with electronic controls, be sure to unplug or turn off the appliance at the breaker for 2 minutes if the display is blank. This will allow the circuitry to reset.

  Washer
Be sure loads are properly balanced and machine is not overloaded.
Be sure lid or door is closing properly and water level is set appropriately.
Check electrical cord, fuses or circuit breaker.
Check for clogged filters or water inlet screens.

Dryer
Poor ventilation can be a common problem with dryers. Be sure hose or pipe is short enough.
Be sure there are no tight bends in the hose and check vent hood outside to verify proper air flow.
Ensure lint trap is clean.
Check electrical cord, fuses and circuit breaker.

Dishwasher
Be sure the door is fully closed and in the locked position.
Remove hardened detergent or mineral deposits from the detergent cup and spray arms.
Check to be sure the temperature of the hot water from the tap is between 140º F and 150º F
Check fuses and circuit breaker.

  Icemaker: problem: not making ice.
On a hot day, have you ever gone to refresh your warm drink with a few cubes from the ice dispenser and got nothing but the auger noise. These small ideas may help.

Does the water dispenser work. If not please check that someone has not shut off the water supply to your fridge (has the plumber been there lately?). The shutoff valve is usually located under the kitchen sink and is teed off from the cold water line or from you filtration system or may be behind your fridge or downstairs in the utility room.. Look for ¼" or 5/16" tubing coming out of the shutoff valve. Open the valve.

Next check the wire sensing hoop (chrome color) attached to your IM unit is not in the off position (i.e. locked in horizontal position). If so please push it down. It will snap into position against the body of the IM unit. It will produce its first cubes usually within a few minutes and continue to fill the ice bin over the next 24-48 hours.

Dishwashers: problem: will not drain:
We often see drainage problems caused by small bits of food/plastic that pass through the filter/chopper systems of a dishwasher ultimately hanging up at a little known fitting beneath the kitchen sink. Water may still continue to drain but more slowly and likely will eventually stop draining. The dirty wash/rinse water remains in the dishwasher. How do we remedy this?

The dishwasher drain hose is commonly attached to what is termed a barbed fitting (black or gray plastic) which forms part of the kitchen sink drain system. The dishwasher drain hose can be removed from the fitting by loosening the hose clamp and then pulling the hose away from the fitting. Place the end of the hose in a bucket or pot and hold it there while turning the dishwasher control to drain. If the line is clear, the water will drain rapidly (less than 30 seconds) into the bucket. Before re-attaching the hose push a rod shaped device (screwdriver) down the barbed fitting to be certain it also is clear of debris. Attach the hose and secure/tighten the clamp and then test for leaks by filling and draining the dishwasher again. If it drains slowly or not at all then there is yet a problem in the dishwasher and will require a technician to service it.

DID YOU KNOW?
Plastics are responsible for about half of all dishwasher drain problems. A watchful I (eye) can help to notice and remove these during loading. Be sure to inspect both sides of those plates and bowls. On new glassware remove those plastic stickers.
