| Jim didn't start in major appliance repair and service; like so many others in the early 1980s, Jim Cain found himself with a degree that there was no market for and he made a decision that would change the course of his life. Jim decided that regardless of his hard-earned forestry degree, he needed to be flexible and focus on a livelihood that wouldn’t be dependant on the ups and downs of the economy or the whimsy of a governing party. Armed with research and study skills, Jim completed a correspondence course in appliance repair; after all, “everyone owns a fridge and a stove”. After honing his skills for a few years in a couple of large appliance repair shops, Jim Cain, the Appliance Doctor, set up shop for himself in 1988 in Calgary Alberta. The company’s goal of providing quality service in a timely manner was rewarded by customer loyalty and many word-of-mouth referrals. |

As the customer base expanded, the need for more technicians arose and Jim’s brother-in-law came on board making Appliance Doctor a full-fledged family operation.
Though much of his role is now managerial and administrative, Jim still does occasional service calls himself. He enjoys the challenges that can arise in the field, but more importantly he enjoys interacting with his clients and the satisfaction that comes with leaving a satisfied customer. |
